Engineered wood flooring – what is it

All About Engineered Wood Floors - This Old House

If you are considering installing a wood floor in your home, you will likely have like heard of engineered wood flooring already. Engineered wood flooring is probably one of the most confusing products on the wood flooring market today. Below you will find what is engineered wood flooring and why you should be considering it.

All engineered hardwood floors are real wood floors compromised of multiple layers, called veneers, that are glued together to make one board. The top layer of the board is what you see and is represented by the species of high-quality hardwood flooring, like oak, maple, etc. The middle and back layers can be of the same species or of different species of wood chosen for durability so that the entire board becomes stable and more resistant to moisture, humidity, or temperature fluctuations. Also, the grain of each layer of the wood runs in different directions, which makes the entire board even more durable.  Depending on the number of layers the wood board is compromised, there are some types of engineered wood flooring:

  • Multi-ply engineered flooring is made up of multiple plywood layers and is the most common type. Usually, boards of floors are compromised of an odd number of layers, such as 5, 7, 9, or 11.
  • 3-ply engineered floor is made up of 3 separate layers of wood and is another favored choice.
  • Also, the middle layer of an engineered floor can be made from medium density fiberboard and high-density fiberboard. MDF and HDF core engineered flooring are less common types. However, they are becoming more popular as they can be extremely versatile.
